Elizabeth Garrett Anderson

was the first woman officially approved to practice medicine in Great Britain, and was a pioneer in opening education in medicine to women. She made great sacrifices and struggled to create new pathways for women in British medicine.

In 1872, Anderson founded the New Hospital for Women in London, staffed by women. Anderson's determination paved the way for other women, and in 1876 an act was passed permitting women to enter the medical professions.
