Earth Day! Learn about Earth Day and what you can do to help protect Planet Earth!

What is Earth Day? Earth Day is a special day that we set aside to celebrate our planet Earth. Just like you celebrate your birthday once a year, people celebrate Earth Day each April 22 nd.

The History of Earth Day The first Earth Day was celebrated back in 1970 in California. On the first Earth Day, many students from colleges and universities showed their support for taking care of our planet. Some people made peaceful protests, and encouraged our government leaders to make laws that would protect our environment.

How can we protect our Earth? Earth Day is often used as a way to remind people that they can take steps to help protect our planet. People want to make sure that the Earth’s air is clean to breathe, our water is pure to drink and that our soil is healthy for growing food.

Earth Day is a Global Event! People from all around the world celebrate Earth Day. Over 200 million people in 141 countries set aside the day to think about the Earth. Whether you live in America, Germany, Japan or Iran – the Earth is still our home.

What can you do to help the environment? Don’t litter! Always pick up your trash!

Recycle! The word “recycle” means to use something over again. Instead of throwing away plastic bottles, you can recycle them and make something new from them.

Look for recycling bins and recycle used paper, plastic and glass. Does your school have recycling bins? If not, why don’t you suggest it? Every small step is a big help to protecting the environment!

Say No to Plastic Bags ! When you go to the grocery store, take some reusable bags with you. Billions of plastic bags from grocery stores are found in our ground, air and water. Bring your own reusable bag instead!

Protecting the Earth is Everybody’s Job! The Earth is a wonderful home for us. We can help keep it that way by taking small steps to show we care.
