» Assess written material used for promotion or induction for its readability, giving details of methods used » Simplify material used for promotion or induction for its readability

What makes a text hard to read? Dense Print No pictures or images CAPITAL LETTERS jargon and acronyms small font size ridiculous font Long sentences and long words of three or more syllables – or beats, such as community which has four syllables – ‘com – mun – it – y’.

» You can calculate the readability of a piece of text using this simple formula called a SMOG test (Standard Measure Of Gobbledegook) » The lower the readability level, the easier something is to read and understand. » A readability level of about 10 will be able to be understood by most people.

» Flesch Reading Ease test This test rates text on a 100-point scale. The higher the score, the easier it is to understand the document. For most standard files, you want the score to be between 60 and 70. The formula for the Flesch Reading Ease score is: » – (1.015 x ASL) – (84.6 x ASW) where: » ASL = average sentence length (the number of words divided by the number of sentences) » ASW = average number of syllables per word (the number of syllables divided by the number of words)

» Chose 2 of the promotional items OR 1 promotional item and one piece of writing online or from a newspaper » The texts you choose must be less than 100 words long » Assess these texts for their readability using SMOG or Flesch

» Now re-write a promotional text (one that is at least 50 words long) to improve its readability.

» First part of session in LRC » You will be creating a piece of promotional material using a font and layout to suit a stated purpose and audience
