Transition from EYFS to Year One Transitions are not over looked or left to chance; good transition takes careful thought and thorough planning well in advance. The transition into KS1 is carefully managed, and staff in the Foundation Stage and Year 1 are already working closely together to ensure it happens as smoothly as possible. Mrs Zino and Mrs Cartwright will continue to oversee transition well into next year – for as long as necessary – and manage any issues that may arise.

Teaching Methods Autumn Term: Free-flow between both classrooms and outside. Child- initiated learning through play. Adult focus groups throughout the week. Spring Term: Carousel of activities over a week. Adult-led groups per week. Summer Term: More whole class teaching in preparation for year 2.

The National Curriculum We teach English, Maths, Phonics and Science as stand alone subjects which are language rich and active using both the indoor and outdoor learning environments to enhance teaching and learning throughout Key Stage One. Our afternoon topics are centred around the National Curriculum Breath of Study for Year One and include: Historical Heroes North and South Poles The Local Area Space The Environment The children will always be encouraged to make links between their lives and the lives of others.

National Curriculum 2014 English – Reading and Writing The new English Curriculum includes the following areas; Word Reading and Comprehension. Handwriting Composition Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation.

National Curriculum 2014 Maths The new Maths Curriculum includes the following areas; Number and Place Value Addition and Subtraction Multiplication and Division Fractions Measurement Properties of Shape Position and Direction

Reading Books are changed a minimum of once a week Guided Reading Sessions Visit the local library Children will be moved onto a new book band when they are ready (fluency and comprehension). It is not a race! Please write in your child's home school diary each time they read. Children are expected to read at least three times a week for 15 minutes in order to develop fluency.

Phonics Screening Check In Year 1, the children are required to take the Phonics Screening Check in June. This checks the children’s ability to blend the sounds we have covered in real and unknown (alien) words. During the check each child will sit with a teacher and read aloud the 40 words contained in the check. We hold a parents workshop in the run up to this Check in the Spring Term We will share the results from the check on your child’s report at the end of the summer term.

Partnership with Parents Inviting parents in to school to discuss the progress of their children twice a year on a formal basis Half termly topic webs to inform parents of curriculum coverage Clear year group expectations can be found on the schools website and in the home/school diaries. Reports are sent home termly to track progress against the year group standards. An open door policy is available all year round, please come in and talk to us.

Rewards Everybody at Mesne Lea believes in praising positive behaviour and hard work! Dojos Certificates Home /School Diary notes with parents Gold Book Awards. Sanctions will follow the whole school Behaviour Policy, using the Rainbow System.
