The New Colossus By: Emma Lazarus A modern Italian (Petrarchan) Sonnet

 The poem’s title and 1 st line refer to the Colossus of Rhodes which was statute of a Greek god.  The Colossus of Rhodes was built was meant to boast or brag a victory.  The poem is on a plaque on the Statute of Liberty.  “The New Colossus” centers on how immigrants passed through Ellis Island to start living in America. Background on “The New Colossus”

 A small island on the New York Harbor.  Processing center for immigrants from Europe such as Irish and Italian also Jewish  Gateway to working in American and achieving the “American Dream”  Statute of Liberty is near the island for all to see as a symbol of hope. Ellis Island
