The Gate to our Treasures unlocked Notre Dame La Grande Church in Poitiers

Notre-Dame La-Grande Church was built in the eleventh century, and its famous facade in the twelfth century, during the romanesque period

The famous facade shows many characters from the Bible. At the highest position, is Jesus Christ, the prophet of Christianity. Under Jesus, there are the 12 apostles and 2 evangelists from our region. Some were damaged by the Huguenots during the war of religions in 1562, and then by the revolutionaries in 1793 Adam and Eve

It has round arches, a cradle shaped vault and sculptures capital at the summit of the columns.

S W N E From above it looks like a latin cross, it faces the east, Jerusalem, considered as the holy city for Christians

The facade used to be richly coloured. During the summer, these colours are projected on the facade to show for a few minutes how beautiful it used to be.

Painting by a local artist
