Diversity within Colonial World Political Religious Ethnic Cultural

Charter Colonies Granted a document by the crown. Partial or conditional grant of sovereign power over an area. Most were founded by joint stock companies.

Propriety Colonies: One powerful individual received authority over a colony from the crown. Usually a gift for loyal subjects. Reflective of royal favor.

Royal / Crown Colonies Colonies directly possessed by the monarch. Had governors as direct reminders of royal power.

NEW ENGLAND COLONIES Survival was NOT guaranteed Farming was difficult, so they made money other ways – Shipbuilding – Fishing/ whaling – Timber/lumber

INFLUENCE OF RELIGION Puritan separatists - wanted to purify and split from the English Church. Literal interpretation of the Bible – If it wasn’t in the Bible, it didn’t need to be in religious celebration or spaces

PLYMOUTH 1620 Pilgrims (persecuted) William Bradford: friendly with neighboring Native American tribes and were taught to farm. Mayflower Compact.

MASSACHUSETTS BAY (1630) John Winthrop - “City on a Hill” Boston Harbor was bustling! Took advantage of the slave trade.

Self Government – theocracy Coming over in droves! What was happening in England?

MIDDLE COLONIES Religiously tolerant and diverse, therefore, had a better relationship with Native Americans and each other.
