2016 Membership Fee Increase

Membership History In 2006, NBCC membership prices increased by an average of 5%. In January of 2010, prices increased between a range of 5% - 10%. In July of 2010, PREC authorized the NBCC to begin offering a monthly payment option, as well as streamlining membership categories. On July 13, 2010, Council authorized changes to membership options.

History Facts In 2010, prior to switching to the monthly payment option, there were 53 membership options available. Including: Annual, 9 month, 9 month extension, 3 month, 3 month extension, 1 month (singles only), employed at a New Brighton company With these options, there were 6 categories: adult, family, Health Wave single, Health Wave family, senior, youth In addition, there were options for having a health insurance benefit, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medica, UCare and United Health Finally, there was a corporate membership rate for companies with 2-9 employees, and 100+

History Facts In September 2010, the department added a monthly payment option, as well as creating efficiencies in membership options. Membership categories went to Adult, Dual, Family, Senior, Youth and Health Wave Single and Health Wave Family. Within the categories, there is a non-resident and resident rate. Total membership options are now 24. There is no longer a separate membership option if you are employed with a New Brighton company, you receive the resident discounted rate. There is no longer a corporate discount, because if you work in New Brighton, you would received the discounted rate.

History Facts Since 2010, only the administrative fee has increased on memberships. This rate was $25 and was increased to $30 in January Membership fees have stayed the same for 5 years.

Club Comparison Research was conducted to compare fitness center pricing between the 9 comparable cities – Crystal, Fridley, Golden Valley, Maplewood, New Hope, Richfield, Roseville, Shoreview, and White Bear Lake. Out of these cities, however, only 2 have a comparable facility. Included Chaska, Eagan, Eden Prairie, and Inver Grove Heights to the comparison chart. Still, comparing pricing is not apples to apples. Each center’s membership includes something different.

Club Comparisons Based on research, the NBCC monthly membership pricing is significantly less than comparable municipal fitness centers. The closest adult resident rate being $30.69 – Chaska, up to the highest rate of $57 for IGH. Annual membership rates are also significantly less with the closest adult resident rate being Shoreview at $351 up to the highest rate of $ for IGH.

2016 Recommendations Staff recommends the Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission consider raising the cost of New Brighton Community Center membership fees 8% on all membership options beginning January 1, This would roughly increase revenue by $12,000-$15,000. This increase would also make it possible for the families with a membership to take advantage of both adults receiving a health insurance benefit rather than just one.
