Learning Targets  Understand conjugation of 3 rd ‘-io’ verbs  Compare with the conjugation of verbs from the 4 th conjugation  Understand how to conjugate 4 th conjugation verbs.

Stem Vowel Review  How do you find the stem vowel of a verb?  What are the stem vowels for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd conjugation verbs?  What is unique about the stem vowel as you conjugate 3 rd conjugation verbs?

4 th Conjugation Verbs  Stem Vowel – ī  Conjugate present tense by adding personal endings  Note – future tense for 3 rd and 4 th conjugation is different from 1 st and 2 nd.  (for 5B – you haven’t had imperfect tense yet, so please disregard any information I gave you on imperfect and future tense for 4 th conjugation last week!)

3 rd Conjugation –io verbs  There are some verbs of the 3 rd conjugation which have an –io ending  These words will have an ‘i’ inserted before the ‘o’ ending of 1 st person singular and before the –unt of 3 rd person plural!

Conjugation of 3 rd Conjugation Verbs  ponoponimus  ponisponitis  ponitponunt  3 rd –io verbs  capiocapimus  capiscapitis  capitcapiunt

Conjugating a 4 th conjugation verb Verbs of the 4 th conjugation are conjugated JUST LIKE 3 rd –io verbs  muniomunimus  munismunitis  munitmuniunt Learn the conjugation with each verb as you learn the principal parts! Remember - PRACTICE is the best teacher 3 rd –io verbs – compare with 4 th  capiocapimus  capiscapitis  capitcapiunt

Chapter 21 – typical word order  Subject Noun/adjective/appositive  Predicate Ablative/indirect object/direct object/adverb/verb

General Guidelines NOT Strict Rules!  Adjectives usually follow their nouns unless they indicate quantity or size  Genitive usually follows its noun  Indirect object generally precedes direct object  A ‘question word’ usually comes first  Action verbs are almost always last.

EMPHASIS  Put emphatic words FIRST in a sentence (Magna erat gloria Romae) – common in English as well  Separate the emphatic word from the word with which it agrees (Magnas puer amico gratias egit).
