Stage 1: Set up: Exactly like CFE experiments -Retrieve hardware from stowage, move to MWA -Mount to MWA by finger-tight screw fastener -Mount camcorder to MWA pointing at FE -Tape sheet of white paper behind FE -Aim work lights at white paper -Verify camera zoom and focus -Set camcorder to record mode Fluids Education: Operations Overview: 3 stages S. Collicott, Purdue and J. Kizito, NC A&T Stage 2: Science Ops: Based on CFE experiment Ops but the details differ. -Turn test vessel valve to specified orientation -Turn reservoir valve to specified orientation -Rotate piston knob to move liquid through channels and right out to the test vessel. -Slowly rotate piston knob thru specified angle to inject a volume of liquid into the test vessel -Wait approximately 0.5 to 3 minutes -Repeat injection or withdrawal and waiting numerous times according to a specified sequence. Rapping on the experiment with knuckles, as in CFE, may be requested. -At end of science procedures, step thru a valve and piston knob procedure to carefully return all liquid to the reservoir. -In case of a liquid positioning anomaly, step through a short valve and piston knob procedure to prepare for gentle centrifuging. -Astronaut handheld gentle centrifuge, as in CFE. Several versions of this action are performed regularly by numerous astronauts with a number of the CFE experiments Stage 3: Tear down: Exactly like CFE experiments -Turn off camcorder -Turn off work lights -Un-mount camcorder, stow for data download -Remove white sheet of paper -Un-screw fastener to MWA, stow fastener -Move FE to stowage CFE Vane Gap

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 3 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama Payload Hardware Operations Description  In this picture, gold is aluminum, rich blue are piston knobs, black are valve knobs, and blue-gray transparent block is acrylic.  Test vessels in the acrylic are rendered as solid surfaces here for clarity in presenting the geometry.  Each reservoir is connected to two test vessels.  No flow paths for liquid from different reservoirs to mix, regardless of valve settings.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 4 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama Objective The TST is a structured planning and decision-making group who determine the payload training requirements for each payload or complement of payloads or experiments. Payload training requirements, and what will be needed to fulfill those requirements for crewmembers, are discussed, defined, and agreed upon during this process.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 5 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama Agenda  TST Products  Payload Hardware/Software Operations Description  Crew Training Curriculum/Hours  Number of Crew to Train  Proposed Payload Training Hardware (PD-Provided)  Proposed Payload Training Support Hardware (NASA-Provided)  On-Board Training Requirements/Development Flow  Payload Instructor Certification  Payload Training Data Set  Schedule

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 8 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama What is different from CEF?  Science topics (thus, fluids geometry) differ.  Existence of middle school STEM curriculum development.  Liquid is transferred from reservoirs to test vessels and back in increments rather than all at once.  Multiple test vessels and reservoirs.  Because of the multiple test vessels and reservoirs, the video data will be less pristine but there will be more data from the experiment.  Undergraduate students heavily involved in design, prototyping, science, STEM curriculum development, astronaut training, analysis, etc.  Joint Purdue and North Carolina Ag & Tech effort.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 9 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama Crew Training Curriculum and Hours  Previously CFE required ground training. One crew member is trained on CFE per increment. What deltas does the crew member need to know? Could this information be taught via OBT (video, ppt, etc)? Is ground training still required?  Objectives of lesson…what does the crew need to know to perform activity successfully? Does this drive us to ground training or on-board training?  What courseware (ppt presentation, slides, diagrams) is required to support lesson?

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 13 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama Payload Instructor Selection and Certification Requirements  Who will be the instructor?  Will there be a backup?  Are multiple instructors needed?  Payload Instructor(s) are certified by successfully performing a Payload Training Dry Run (PTDR) for each lesson

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 14 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama On-Board Training  Could include first time training, refresher training or proficiency training that will be required prior to on-board payload operations.  Time for lessons is taken from Payload’s on-board operation allotment.  Guidelines for OBTs are documented in the Video Best Practices presentation.  All courseware used for training must have been through a Payload Training Dry Run (PTDR).
