CVE The Place to Be Closing the opportunity gap by connecting students to school and community.

Our Vision and mission We, the learning community of Castro Valley Elementary School, believe all students will reach their highest learning potential by fostering a school climate committed to equity, a sense of community, a joy for teaching and learning, students’ well-being and academic success. We are highlighting two outstanding programs offered to CVE students and families which embrace two of the 8 Components of Coordinated School Health Physical Education and Family and Community Involvement. ● basketball intramurals ● new standards and court lines ● CVE Spirit Squad in action during the Rowell Ranch Rodeo parades

Achieving academic Success through Coordinated school health According to The California Department of Health Services there is a distinct link between health and academic achievement: There is clear evidence that academic performance is linked to student health and physical fitness levels. ●Student participation in recess is generally associated with improvements in attention, concentration, and/or on-task classroom behavior. ●School physical education programs have shown favorable effects on students’ academic achievement through increased concentration and improved performance in mathematics, reading, and writing tests. ●Schools with higher percentages of students who are less engaged in risky behaviors such as substance use and violence, who are more likely to eat nutritiously and exercise, and who report caring relationships and high expectations at school make greater progress in raising test scores. f

“Mental is to physical as four is to one”- Bobby Knight, Indiana university basketball coach “It makes you think about strategies. You need to focus and think on the fly.” Karas, 4th grader “Basketball is my favorite sport. The new hoops help me with practice. I see what other people are doing here and take it to practice.” Michelle, 4th grader ●Jersey Day is a favorite tradition at CVE

Kids in action on the courts “Playing basketball is fun! You can dunk and shoot 3 pointers. I want to play more now. It feels awesome! I play with my friends.” Elonte, 4th Grader

Community INvolvement Basketball standards and courts upgraded through grant monies Championed by Tim Brophy, P.E Specialist ●Additional grant monies to paint lines and outline the basketball courts Zach Hill, Community Relations at Golden State Warriors ●CVUSD and CVE alumni $6500 in grant funds

Marching to our own beat Castro Valley Elementary Spirit Squad ● dedicated 4-5 graders ● noon time and Friday afternoon practices ● 45 students participate 28% of grades 4-5 ● CV Parade of Lights ● Rowell Ranch Rodeo Parade ● Pancake breakfast fundraisers at Knudsen’s Ice creamery

Community Strong, all year long ● Receiving 1st place award at the parade ● Raising school spirit funds at Knudson’s Ice Creamery-Staff joins the fun!

Engaging students in school through physical education Evidence says... Spirit Squad Attendance Rates The CVE Spirit Squad teaches the students: self discipline and responsibility, builds up self esteem and self confidence, helps them work as a team, gives them motivation and something to look forward to every day and week, gives them self and community pride. Ms. Rose, CVE Parent and Spirit Squad Coordinator 94%96% 97%99%

School Community Speaks Out for Physical Education and Family and Community Involvement Mrs. Theodore, CVE Parent, Board Member The majorette squad is an amazing opportunity for our students to work as a team as well as learn discipline. It gives these students a greater connection to CVE and to their community. Mrs. Stone is a superstar and is amazingly giving of her time to these students. They love her as much as she loves them, and that is A LOT!
