HENAN BY MADDIE GOOD

Absolute Location Latitude- 31° 23' to 36° 22' N Longitude-110° 21' to 116° 38' E Relative Location It is bounded to the north by the provinces of Shanxi and Hubei, to the east by Shandong and Anhui, to the west by Shaanxi, and to the south by Hubei. LOCATION

PLACE Physical Characteristics Yellow river is a body of water that divides the province in half Henan can be divided topographically into two parts, the western highlands and the eastern plains. In the northwest the rugged Taihang and Zhongtiao mountains form the steep eastern edge of the Shanxi Plateau, rising in places above 5,000 feet (1,524 meters). To the east lie the plains. Henan is therefore more subject to years of alternating heavy rain and drought More than 400 varieties of vertebrate land animals inhabit the province, most of them living in the upland forests The natural vegetation of Henan is deciduous forest and woodland over the plains, and deciduous and coniferous forest in the western highlands.

PLACE Human Characteristics population- 93,600,000 Ethnic minorities Hui 1% Han 98.8% Most of Henan speaks dialects of the Mandarin group of dialects spoken in northern and southwestern China Important traditional art and craft products include: Junci, a type of porcelain originating in Yuzhou noted for its unpredictable colour patterns; the jade carvings of Zhenping; and Luoyang's Tangsancai ("Tang Three Colors"), which are earthenware figurines made in the traditional style of the Tang Dynasty. Henan has seen rapid development in its economy over the past two decades.. This rapid growth has transformed Henan from one of the poorest provinces to one that is the fifth largest economy in China, although it ranks nineteen in terms of GDP per capital. Governor- Guo Gengmao 郭庚茂

REGION FUNCTIONAL REGION Zhengzhou- capital, largest city in Henan Henan has three river systems: the Huang He in the north and northeast, the Huai River in the east and southeast, and the Tang and Bai rivers in the southwest. The latter two drain southward into Hubei, eventually joining the Han River The red star is the capitol

REGION PERCEPTUAL REGION In an essentially agricultural province such as Henan, cultural life is centered in the rural community. While families for the most part live in their own homes. HOUSE IN HENAN

REGION FORMAL REGION Henan has a temperate climate that is humid subtropical. Usually hot, humid summers and cool or cold, windy, dry winters Main food crops include winter wheat, millet, kaoliang, soybeans, barley, corn (maize), sweet potatoes, rice, and green lentils. Wheat is by far the most important. Area- 167,000 km (64,000 sq. mi)

HUMAN ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION WHAT PEOPLE HAVE DONE TO CHANGE THE LAND Henan is a significant producer of energy, with thermal plants in Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Kaifeng, and Xinxiang linked by a power line. An ultrahigh-voltage transmission system, one of the largest in China when it was completed in the early 1980s, transports electricity from the Pingdingshan area to Wuhan in Hubei province. Hydroelectricity is of growing importance. In addition to the Sanmen facility, there is the even larger Xiaolangdi station on the Huang He north of Luoyang.

MOVEMENT MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE Some roads penetrate into the more remote mountain region, but most of the other highways now have all- weather surfaces. Air travel is centered on Zhengzhou

MOVEMENT MOVEMENT OF GOODS Zhengzhou is at the junction of China's two greatest trunk railways, the line running from Beijing to Guangzhou and the Longhai line, which runs from the east coast to Xinjiang, in the far northwest. Local railroads have also been developed, and most of the province's goods are now carried by rail. Henan cuisine is the local cuisine, with traditions such as the Luoyang "Water Table", consisting entirely of various soups the Xinyang brewed vegetables, and the traditional cuisine of Kaifeng. The province is a national leader in lead, aluminum, and glass production.
