Historical Materialism is the application of Marxist science to historical development. Is a methodological approach to the study of society, economics, and history. It looks for the causes of developments and changes in human society in the means by which humans collectively produce the necessities of life.

Karl Heinrich Marx (Berlin Germany, 5 May 1818 – 14 March 1883) was a German philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. He was the first one to articulate the historical materialism as "the materialist conception of history".

Friedrich Engels (German, 28 November 1820 – 5 August 1895) was a German-English industrialist, social scientist, author, political theorist, philosopher, and father of Marxist theory, alongside Karl Marx. In 1845 he published The Condition of the Working Class in England, based on personal observations and research.

Historical materialism builds upon the idea that became current in philosophy from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries that the development of human society has moved through a series of stages, from hunting and gathering, through pastoralism and cultivation, to commercial society.

Through practical everyday life wage-laborers reproduce themselves physically, work to earn money in order to buy food, shelter and clothing they need to survive. Wage-laborers as part of their "jobs" engage in production, production of the things they need to buy in order to survive.
