Presentation transcript:

Imperialism is a time when powerful European nations created large empires by exercising economic and political control over weaker regions.

How did the United States practice imperialism in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries?  The United States invaded other territories such as Cuba, China, Mexico, Japan, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Panama & Hawaii. The united states tried to force them to join the united states.

 Cuba was technically a free country but under the control of the united states. So therefore Cuba was a protectorate.

Hawaii

Hawaii didn’t want to be apart of the united states. The united states didn’t care that Hawaii wanted to be free so the United States annexed Hawaii.

Pearl Harbor

China

China could trade freely with the United States this policy was called Open Door Policy. China was to weak so they needed foreign powers to exploit its vast resources and markets.

 The United States didn’t like the idea of General Huerta over throwing the government in Mexico.  Mexico then went to a time where they reviled the weakness of the dollar diplomacy.  The United States hated Huerta so much they sold weapons to Venustiana Caranza to over throw Huerta.

Panama

The United States wanted to build a canal across Panama. Building a canal would shorten time across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
