2 INSTRUCTOR Name: Abdullah Said Alkalbani Qualifications: Bsc & Msc (Computer Engineering), Ph.D(in progress) Office Location:Lecturer Room C4 Office Hours: Sun & Tue 1pm - 3pm, Mon & Wed 9 am – 11 am Or by prior Arrangement

1-3 Course Topics  Computer Systems : An Overview of Computer Systems  Number Systems : Relationships between numbering systems and conversion techniques  Data Formats : Different types of data formats, including alphanumeric, image, and sound  Floating Point Numbers: Floating-point representations and calculations  The Little Man Computer: Use of simple model to develop the concept of an instruction set.

1-4 Course Topics  The CPU and Memory: CPU components, Design, Implementation and Enhancement  Analysis and Comparison of four CPU architectures: CISC, RISC, VLIW, and EPIC  Input / Output: Principles of I/O Operation  Computer Peripherals: I/O in various devices  Modern Computer Systems, Clusters, and Networks

1-5 Assessment Strategy  Continuous Assessment ( 40% of Total Grade):  Assignments: 10%  Quizzes & Lab 30%  Examinations (60% of Total Grade):  Mid-term exam 20%  Final exam 40%
