What is Suggestopedia? Suggestopedia is a teaching method and considered to be one of humanistic approaches. It was developed by Georgi Lozanov, a Bulgarian educator and psychotherapist in 1970s.

The principles of Suggestopedia “memorization in learning through suggestopedia would be accelerated by up to 25 times over that in conventional learning methods”. (Lozanov 1978: 27). Students learn new information very quickly and efficiently in a state of light relaxation accompanied by Baroque or classical music. The main concern is physical environment, the more comfortable and relax student is the more effective language learning is.

Key Elements of suggestopedia Soft music Dim lightning Relaxing atmosphere Comfortable armchairs Baroque or Classical music Dramatised texts Extended dialogues Imitation Role play Listening activities Songs and games

Stages of Suggestopedia method

Stage 1: Presentation: Warming up the students to help them to relax and move to a positive state, and that learning is going to be easy and fun. Stage 2: Active Concert: Active presentation of the material to be learnt with a classical music. Stage 3: Passive Review: Students are now invited to relax and listen to Baroque music, with the text being read. Stage 4: Practice: Use games and puzzles and review the learning.

Using Suggestopedia Advantages Disadvantages 1. Higher and faster learning. 2.Higher confidence and self-esteem. 3. Lower classroom anxiety. 4. No homework. 1. Some learners can’t study with comfortable environment and music. 2. Not suitable with older learners. 3.Not suitable with some subjects ( sciences, math).
