STUDENT ETIQUETTE

Sending s: Things to Remember 1. You want to make a good impression of yourself to the professor 2. This is a professional , not a message to a high school friend 3. Correct spelling and grammar are both necessary!

Things to Check and Double Check Compose from an appropriate address. Your campus is a safe choice. Remember: if you wouldn't use it to your grandparents, don't use it for professional s either! Get to the point in the subject line. Fill this space out with your first and last name, as well as the course you are taking with the professor. Begin your respectfully. Instead of using phrases like, "What up" and "Yo, teach," begin your with something along the lines of, "Good Morning, Dr. X". Don't drag it out. Be clear and to the point. Your professors have to sift through hundreds of s every day-make yours an easy read!

Things to Check and Double Check Avoid text/social media lingo. "LOL, omg teach," might not be the most appropriate way to word an to a professor. Organize! Make sure that your document is easy to follow if you are submitting an assignment. This means using appropriate spacing and indentation. Double-check your content. Make sure that your sentences are complete and that your grammar is correct. Be thankful. End your by thanking the professor for their time and signing off with your name and course.

Sample Good Afternoon Dr. Austin, I hope you are having a wonderful day. In regards to our assignment that is due next class, do you have a preference for formatting/organizing our solutions? Also, I am unable to visit during your posted office hours due to my work schedule. I have a couple of questions from our last few lectures. Would it be possible to schedule an appointment on Friday afternoon, by any chance? I am available any time after noon. Thank you in advance, Mike McGee, PHY 110

Sample: What was good about it? The greeting was polite and thoughtful Professional language was used throughout the It was short, sweet and to the point The student signed off with his full name and course The professor was thanked

Classroom Ettiquette Aim to be remembered for your academic performance, not by what you wear. Professors might write letters of reccomendation for students that they appreciate or feel worked hard, so take the time now to make a good impression! A student with a borderline grade is more likely to get bumped up if they show initiative, are punctual and attentive, and perform well academically. Professors will always remember those students who are disruptive, tardy, or disrespectful. They will also remember the good students. How do you want to be remembered?

Basic Ettiquette Standards 1. Arrive on time, and avoid walking out of class early. 2. Observe and respect your professor's electronics policy, located in the syllabus provided at the start of the semester. 3. Avoid talking and laughing during the lecture, unless appropriate. 4. Attire: Females, be mindful of the length of clothing, and how much skin is shown due to your attire 5. Attire: Males, be mindful of suggestive t-shirts and baseball caps
