She was a world-famous Catholic nun. From the age of 18 she worked in India to help the poor. For more than 30 years she took care of people who were often mentally or physically disabled. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in

Discussion 1. Do you know a woman who really inspires you? Describe her and explain why you admire her. A: The woman who really inspires me is my mother. Although she is only a housewife, she is warm-hearted.

She ’ s always ready to help anyone who needs help. One day my neighbor was ill seriously, and her husband was not at home. It’s my mother who carried her to the hospital, and paid her medical care. She used to tell us to be kind to everyone around us. She

made me understand that the most valuable thing in our life is kindness. I think she is right. B: To me the most admirable woman is Zhang Huilan. She is a famous Yoga teacher. She introduced Yoga to Chinese by TV programme. She was born in a rich family,

but she got the habit of taking drug. Finally she began to do Yoga and managed to get rid of the bad habit. She traveled to many places in the world to teach people Yoga, which brought them healthy bodies and souls. So I admire her.

2. For women it sometimes seems twice as difficult. Is it more difficult for women to become famous or get jobs in high positions? What do you think? I agree. Until today in some countries, parents like to have boys instead of girls. And girls are not

allowed to go to school. They stay at home to do some housework and to take care of her brothers. Besides this, people also have different ideas about the things that men are good at and women are good at. As a result, it is more difficult for women to get jobs

in high positions. And companies prefer to give men more pays than women, even though they do the same jobs. I think that ’ s unfair.

Describe a person, using the following words. Speaking

Talking on P95 1. Is it difficult for women to get a good job? Do you think that there are some jobs that women can’t do? Give your reasons. It’s difficult for women to get a good job. One reason is that people still have prejudices

against women. The other maybe that in the modern society the supply and request in work force don’t equal. There are not enough jobs for people to do, so some people think that women had better stay at home to leave more room for men. And at

the same time women can teach their own children and give them better early education. This is good for the family and also for the country. It ’ s a good thing. Because of these reasons many people don ’ t like women to have a job. This adds the difficulty

for women to get a job. But that doesn ’ t mean that there are some jobs that women can ’ t do. Man and woman are different in physical and mental feature, so women may be good at this kind of job, while men are good at that kind of job. Men are stronger than

women, so they are suitable to become workers to build houses, while women are gentler than men, so they tend to become nurses or teachers.

2. It is even more difficult for women to become leaders or managers. Do you think that women are less able than men? Give your opinions. It’s more difficult for women to become leaders or managers. In China people would like to

describe a woman, using such a saying: long hair, short wise. In fact, not all women have long hair, and not all women are less wise than men. In society, the room for women to develop themselves is so narrow that people can seldom find their

potential. If women are totally liberated from heavy housework and get the equal chance to become leaders or managers, no one will believe that women are less wise or able than men. This has been proved at least in the area of film and entertainment.

So the problem is not that women are not wise or able enough to become leaders or managers, but that the chances for them to become these kinds of people are too small.
