Main Topic Areas < PASI’12 ADS – Transmutation Project X – Target station design – Irradiation Opportunities High energy cyclotrons/FFAGs – Development of concepts – ‘Making it real’ – Common tools and methods Medical FFAGs – A simplified proton FFAG design – Gantry design – Diagnostics and imaging – proton computed tomography – Laser-protons Compact accelerators/industrial – POP high-intensity FFAG – Reactions for applications

Accelerator-Driven Systems Seen as a VERY large scale activity (true!) – Many $B – Many years (>20) – Restricted to e.g. transmutation experiments, if anything Despite construction of MYRRHA, little appetite in the UK or USA for serious ADS development – Lack of market – Research funding elsewhere (e.g. fast reactors) – Proliferation/security issues, even USA/UK Conclusion: ‘Watching Brief’

Project X Target Station PNNL/FNAL is spearheading development No UK activity as yet Main advantage is large volumes, and more flexible neutron spectrum – Realistic reactor fuel element irradiation – Requires good reliability Probably split between goals of Project X and projects such as IFMIF – Laser fusion community might be interested Conclusion – Make a contact group of possibly-interested parties: – Culham, UK nuclear fuel community

High Energy Cyclotrons/FFAGs Good programme of development in two areas: – H2+ cyclotron for DAEDALUS – 1 GeV FFAG for ADS Some overlap already, e.g. code development (OPAL) Could be improved with iterative design focusing on ‘show-stoppers’ – Design concept review in next 12 months? Number of abstracts submitted to AccApp conference on nuclear applications Would benefit from travel funding for staff exchange Steel (1006) estimate: Weight ~5.17E5 kg (including “field clamps”) Envelope size: Height 2.56 m Width 3.99 m Arc-Length 9.17 m (outer) 4.99 m (inner)

Medical FFAGs A great deal of work in the last 12 months in the UK Number of collaborations set up with hospitals Enthusiasm for 330 MeV proton FFAG for proton computed tomography Gantry designs have significant scope for improvement Proton computed tomography instrument interest at FNAL, Northern Illinois, Loma Linda, UK hospitals, Manchester, Liverpool and Lincoln Conclusions Working group on medical proton FFAG – IOP Meeting on medical FFAGs – Engagement of industry in stating main needs (mainly driving down cost) – Overlap with future EMMA plans Staff exchange visit on gantry design Explore possibility of gantry magnet demonstration – PM (Trbojevic) and SC (Witte) options – Relation to US carbon therapy initiative – Use of alpha sources in demonstrators Make contacts on proton CT, and coordinate a development activity

Optimising Gantries 4.1 m 8.6 m 20.8

Laser Acceleration/Gabor Lenses – POP at 30 MeV?

Compact Accelerators Variety of small projects already in progress in UK, with good contacts between them Small high-intensity ring designs Nuclear reactions and application Is there conflict between – ‘Physics’ interest in proof-of- principle proton FFAGs – Simple design for e.g. isotope production that would be of interest in industry Conclusion No particular US overlap, but needs exploration of commercial partners – (UK isotope workshop last Dec) ‘PIP’, 8-14 MeV, p+

Some general ideas Funding for staff exchange Mutual access to infrastructure – Proton beams for medical diagnostic developments PhD studentships?
