Social Studies Mrs. Underwood This year we will explore the geography, culture, and government of the following regions: Africa Middle East (Southwest Asia) Southern and Eastern Asia

Language Arts Mrs. Howie  Students will be reading a variety of selections, both literary and informational. Writing is critical to learning, so students will produce a variety of writings throughout the entire school year.  The Instructional Non-Negotiables for Writing in All Classrooms will be a continued focus.  Formative assessments will be taken to determine student learning as they go. This will be accomplished through class- work, participation, quizzes, warm-ups, etc.  Summative assessments will be taken to determine mastery in a specific domain. This will be accomplished through tests, constructed responses, projects, and presentations.

Math Ms. Vineyard  The math workbook IS the math textbook.  Math homework is assigned Monday through Thursday.  Want to help your child succeed in math? Encourage them to memorize and practice their multiplication facts! Flash card games and the computer game“Math Mayhem” are excellent tools.

Incentives  Honor Roll Party  Positive Calls and Notes Home  Incentive Activities  Student of the Week/Quarter  Class room incentives vary by teacher  LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP PROVIDE AN INCENTIVE!

Behavior Consequences  Our team uses a demerit system which is a set of progressive consequences for unproductive behavior. Students will receive these consequences for being unprepared for class, being off task – this includes talking during instruction, or causing class disruptions.  1 – verbal warning  2 – documented warning w/ team conference  3 – silent lunch with contact  4 – team afterschool detention  5 – in house with another teacher  6 – office referral

Bring Your Own Technology…  Throughout the year we will be encouraging students to use technology. This includes the use of cell phones, Kindles, Nooks, Ipods, Ipads, etc…This however does not change our school rules for the use of cell phones or other technology. Students are not permitted to use cell phones or listen to music in school unless it is part of a learning activity.  Cell phones and other devices are not allowed in the bathrooms, cafeteria, hallways or gym and should remain in the students locker and be turned off during school time.  Please do not call or text your child during school hours. They WILL forget to put their phone up, they WILL keep their phone in their pocket, they WILL forget to silence it if they try to be sneaky They WILL be kids!  They WILL also get their phone taken away   We understand your concerns about being able to contact your child and for your child to be able to contact you during the day. We are happy to deliver important messages to your child and will make sure that they have access to a phone in case of emergency.

Need to Meet? We’re very happy to schedule a time to talk with you about your child, but due to lack of privacy and time, tonight is not a good time for a parent/ teacher conference. If there is something we must know about your child day one please write the information down and give it to one of us. Thanks! Our planning time is 8:30- 9:30 Wednesday. Scheduled upon request.

 How do I know how my child is doing??  Your child is encouraged to use his/her planner everyday.  Parents are encouraged to use Parent Portal!  Please visit our websites to stay updated on all assignments ~ you can access those from:  Websites are used by each teacher to post things like:  Homework  Schedule  Lesson Plans  Extra Credit Opportunities  Special Project Information  Requests  Announcements  Contests  We encourage if you have any questions or concerns.

Infinite Campus  Is used by you to access your child’s grades in any class.  Our team will update grades within the county recommended five day wndow.  See the media center for your access code.

Contact Information We will be sending home information on “REMIND” which is a way to get messaged reminders from the school on your phone or OR you can sign up today!
