Publications status New CERN and the Environment brochure available New LHC Guide available New General information sheet printing New ALICE brochure printing LHC physics brochure next to be produced

Brochures Step 4: Layout. We can do it, but we need at least one week per brochure, two weeks for the LHC Guide. New rule! Layout will only start once text is final. No more changes will be possible. Brochure requests: Austria, Finland, Germany, Greece, Norway, Poland, Spain…

New audio visual material The LHC in 10’ New animations from STFC

Methodology New exhibitions CERN through the lens of Peter Ginter Science Grand Format New travelling exhibition - call to tender underway New permanent exhibition - funded

Methodology CERN on Youtube

Methodology Planning for first injection

Methodology Increasing media awareness 2002: 417 journalists, 232 media 2007: 1387 journalists, 547 media 2008 to date: about 200 media *Media briefing days by country since 2004 Media monitoring service acquired Media training: dedicated training by for small selected groups ongoing Press conference foreseen for ESOF2008 in July New audio & video material in preparation, including computer generated imagery to explain LHC physics Notable examples: BBC radio 4 particle day; Radio Suisse Romande programmes on and around 21 October *APES (Association of foreign press in Switzerland), Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic (April 2008), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK.

Methodology The world is watching…

Methodology First injection… Locations: CERN Control centre Globe of science and innovation

Methodology First injection Day 1 - visits can be arranged to CERN Control centre Day 2 - activity centred on the Globe Media invitation to be sent four weeks in advance Accreditation necessary

Methodology First injection Cameras in the Globe would relay images to the Globe (and the world) Bi-lingual presenter would be in the CCC Satellite link available via media partner Live LHC console in the Globe Media ‘pilots’ available in the Globe for all nations whose media attend Possible visits to experiments’ control rooms and CCC during the day (to be confirmed) Regular updates to be sent to media for the following weeks until first collisions

Methodology First injection Start-up == opening the hydrogen bottle

Methodology First injection Plan for the day: 9:00 Briefing to media in the Globe 9:30 First injection & report On the hour: Briefing to media in the Globe Through the day: Visits around the site

Methodology First injection Requests from Member States: Germany: Web feed on 21 October Greece: Web feed on 21 October Norway: Web feed for first injection UK: BBC Web feed for first injection

Methodology First injection Services to be provided by media partner: Establishment of portal for text, pictures, video Distribution of b-roll, multimedia news release Provision of satellite truck and management of time slot booking for stand-ups (upto 6 simultaneous) Media relations support (links to TV newsrooms)

Methodology First injection Requests from Member States:Germany: Web feed on 21 OctoberGreece: Web feed on 21 OctoberNorway: Web feed for first injectionUK: BBC Web feed for first injection Norway: Will invite main TV to come to CERN for fist injection. Possible event in national science week in September. Nothing planned as yet for October. UK: October- Nothing. First injection - most journalists would come here. STFC will support. Possible simultaneous event in London - What’s proposed by CERN will suffice. Also BBC online webfeed on website. Poland: October Polish president will come (!) In September, science festival in Poland includes exhibition in Warsaw that will run for some months. Symposium in Warsaw in April - will target media. Linked to Science picnic in June etc, exhibition in Curie museum about CERN in May-June. No specific request for either July or October. Italy: first injection - mid July not good. Will focus on ESOF. Decision when date known. Will organise somehthing for official inauguration - LHC day in Milan.Conference for general public, image show near museum. Possibility of other museums. Possible request for live link from here. Switzerland: First injection- will help with Swiss german. Possible national event next spring - launch of touring exhibition in Switzerland, planning swiss website. Science cafes. Germany: To be added. Czech republic: Nothing yet defined. Netherlands: Will participate in both events. 21 October is after NIKHEF open day. NIKHEF has hired a consultant. No specific request for either day. Austria: Exhibition planned for October 14- to end of month. Opening event on 14 October. 21 October, public day. President will come to Geneva. Request - live feed from ceremony in Geneva. Request for material, especially film. For first injection - media to CERN. Spain: Journalists here for first injection. Not clear whether spanish institutes will organize events- webstream. October. Exhibiton in Barcelona around official inauguration. Live link from CERN possible. Request - Wrong spanish flag is flying in front of CERN!!! France: Cite des sciences may do have event for first injection - live feed to be available. Event will probably be in the evening - two way for the evening. Web feed request for both events. For October - CNRS science festival in Bx. Satellite feed, possible video conference with French scientists. LHC page 1 etc. Portugal: Feeds sufficient for both days. Timing of 9:30 injection works well for Portuguese TV news slots. N.B. Show stock shots tomorrow Actions: CTFC animations and German CAD files in workspace.
