What is the Self Review Framework? Presented by Matt Gurney

Background to the Self Review Framework 2005 – Secretary of State for Education issues a challenge for Becta to lead in the development of a roadmap to enable schools to identify where they are and give practical steps to deploy ICT resources to best effect. Becta’s response is to work in collaboration with partner organisations to develop the Self Review Framework

Developing the Framework A model for self-review and guide towards e-maturity Developed and supported by all partner agencies Carried out in school and supported via an online self review tool Enables progress toward and beyond the ICT Mark

Who Created the Self Review Framework? The framework has been developed cooperatively by a range of professional bodies involved in education and ICT Leadership and ManagementNCSL CurriculumStrategies Learning and teachingBecta AssessmentQCA Professional DevelopmentTDA Extending Opportunities for LearningBecta ResourcesBecta Impact on pupil outcomesOfsted

Why do we need the Self Review Framework? Q1. How many of us here think the use of ICT in their school is average or better? Q2. How many of us think the use of ICT in their school is good or better? Q3. How many of us think our ICT use is outstanding? Q4. How do you know?

Purposes of the Self Review Framework The purposes of the Self Review Framework are to enable schools to; Better manage and develop ICT in line with best practice, Identify effective and ineffective use of valuable resources, Plan improvements and future developments, Recognise achievement, Promote better learning.

Why Should We Use the SRF? Only 1 in 5 schools are using ICT effectively – What constitutes ‘effective’ ICT use? – If my school is one of the 80% not using ICT effectively, what do I need to do to reach the required position? Ofsted “ICT in primary and secondary schools” (jan 2008) – “Schools need better guidance on evaluating ICT development and its impact on whole-school improvement” – “Schools need more help with assessing pupils’ ICT capability …” – “The potential for ICT needs to be recognised and built into school improvement planning …” – “Pupils’ use of ICT inside and outside school needs to be taken into account” – “Training is needed for subject leaders, teachers and assistants”

What is the Self Review Framework? The Self Review Framework (SRF) is … …both a process and a tool to enable schools to measure, record and improve their use of ICT.

Who should be involved in completing the SRF? The SRF is not a tool for one person Leadership needs to be in place – For the whole process – For each element (?) The SRF is about whole-school improvement, therefore, The whole school needs to be involved

Possible processes In the next slide, you will be shown different possible ways which you can use to implement the Self Review Framework in your school. If you already have processes in place to review other aspects of your school, then it may be best to use those processes to carry out the SRF.
