Making Learning Transparent: Bridging Hands-On Mathematical Experiences February 26, 2013

Using VoiceThread as a Tool to Understand Student Thinking

Outcome Participants will understand how voice thread can be used in the elementary mathematics classroom by participating in a model lesson.

Agenda Welcome Model Lesson Overview VoiceThread Lesson Lesson Debrief

Technology Needed: Computer or mobile device Speakers

Model Lesson During the Model Lesson, observe for the following:  How does the technology increase student engagement during the lesson?  How does the technology support the teacher with assessing student learning?

Learning Objective Using a rich mathematical task, students will be able to construct a solution using multiple representations, demonstrate understanding of multiplication and division, and interpret the meaning of a remainder. Technology tools will be used to create and share student’s mathematical thinking with one another. Title of Presentation

Language Objective Students will use precise academic language to explain their mathematical reasoning.

Standards for Mathematical Practice 1.Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 3.Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 5.Use appropriate tools strategically 6.Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure

Content Standards Grade 2: OA.4 Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.

Content Standards Grade 3 : OA.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each, or 7 groups of 5 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.

Dot Talk How many dots do you see? How do you see them?

Voice Thread Directions iPad/iPod 1)Click on Voice Thread App 2)Click Create 3)Click the white plus sign 4)Click on Camera 5)Take a picture of dots 6)Click done 7)Click on Comment 8)Click on microphone 9)Begin voice thread (you can change the color of the font by clicking on the white circle to the right of the arrow) 10) Click on Save (bottom right of the screen

Commenting on colleagues voice thread From your computer, go to “My Voice”, and drag your Voicethread into our breakout session for others to view. Go to Groups and click on Tech2Core-Math Elementary. – Click on a voice thread and the comment button Click on record: “OK Start Talking” will appear. You may use your mouse to annotate. Click on “Ok Start Talking when you are finished with your comment Click on Save.

Content Standards 4.OA.2- Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison. 4.OA.3- Solve multi-step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding and explain why a rounded solution is appropriate.

MARS Task Singing in the Rain – Grade 4 – 2012

MARS Task Use voicethread to record solution to question #2 Critique solutions

Model Lesson Debrief How did the technology increase student engagement during the lesson? How did the technology support the teacher with assessing student learning?

Outcome Participants will understand how voice thread can be used in the elementary mathematics classroom by participating in a model lesson.
