Five dead in Chile

A magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck Tuesday evening off northern Chile, triggering a small tsunami for the South American coast and leaving at least five dead. The dead were four men and one woman who died of either heart attacks or being crushed to death. The powerful quake's epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean about 60 miles northwest of Iquique, Chile, and 12.5 miles deep, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake occurred at 8:46 p.m. local time (7:46 p.m. ET). A tsunami warning was issued for the coasts of Chile, Peru and Ecuador, while high-wave watches were posted for residents of coastal Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica.

In Other News While searchers scanned the ocean surface for a 26th day Wednesday with planes and ships, the possibility that something sinister may have happened to the Malaysian plane hasn't been discounted. Malaysian police said Wednesday they have interviewed about 170 people, and will continue questioning families and those who had access to the plane. Officials have always said they were looking at four possibilities: hijacking, sabotage, personal problems and psychological issues. A Malaysian government source said on Monday that the airliner's turn off course is being considered a "criminal act," either by one of the pilots or someone else. But a senior Malaysian government official said last week that authorities have found nothing in days of investigating the two pilots that leads them to any motive, be it political, suicidal or extremist. Two drones, suspected of being from North Korea, have crashed in South Korea in the last two weeks, according to government officials from the South. The discoveries raise questions over South Korea's air defense and the North's aerial capabilities. James Valentine is a 21-year-old Pennsylvania man who survived a work accident that sent the razor-sharp teeth of a chainsaw blade deep into his neck and shoulder, and barely a centimeter from a vital artery. Thanks to quick but cautious work by his colleagues and medical responders, 30 stitches and an hour of surgery, a day after the accident Valentine was recovering in stable condition at a Pennsylvania hospital. Valentine was on his job with Adler Tree Service in Gibsonia, north of Pittsburgh, and was performing maintenance work on a pine tree when the chainsaw "kicked back.“ Valentine sustained most of his injuries to muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder, rather than his neck. Veteran wide receiver DeSean Jackson has reportedly agreed to a contract with the Washington Redskins.
