국제교류문화진흥원 International Exchange & Cultural Promotion Institute Tel : After the internship.. Right off the bat, I want to say that I think my experience with Marie-story was a great learning opportunity! More than anything else, I got to experience a couple different fields of work, and I was able to get a feel for how these fields function. For example, through Marie-story I was able to try my hand at editing a wide variety of texts such as elementary kid’s textbooks and comics aimed for young teens. I was also able to help kids from the 1st grade all the way up to high-school students, quite a diverse crowd. Through this experience I developed my own teaching style, which is that I’m firm when I first meet the students, but then as we go on I make room for fun and learning later on. I think these past months have given me a glimpse into the kind of job that I would like to have once I graduate. I’ve always liked kids, and through this job I was able to figure out that I would take teaching kids and interacting with other people over working in an office any-day. I’ve made lots of great memories with the kids that I taught here, and over the course of the last couple months I got to know a couple of them as I often had more than one class with them. We were able to have a fun time learning history and practicing English together! Brendan Elworthy Internship Period : ~ MarieStory - Thoughts and feedback upon finishing my internship

국제교류문화진흥원 International Exchange & Cultural Promotion Institute Tel : (…) The thing that makes Marie-story stand out is that they always strive to understand and accept other’s mistakes while at the same time they strive to perfect their own mistakes. I saw this in the past couple months, when the staff at Marie-story began to hold regular meetings with the teachers and FTRAs before class, to remind them to stick to their lesson plans and look after the kids in a orderly fashion. I think it is quite admirable in the sense that the company can see something that needs fixing, and then take steps to fix it. The teaching model of having a FTRA help the kids for an hour or two hours at a time also helped reinforce a sense of responsibility within me, and I feel like I am more capable leader because of it. On a more personal note, this was the first time that I’ve ever had the opportunity to teach kids of this age; I’ve tutored university students before, but I’ve never had the chance to work with kids on a professional level. It was a great experience, and it helped solidify my desire to become a teacher. I don’t know what the future will hold for me, but I’m sure that I would like to work with kids for at least part of my career, and this is in a large part due to the opportunity offered to me by Marie-story. I’m leaving Korea in a few short weeks, and I will undoubtedly miss the kids, staff, co-teachers, FTRAs and others that I’ve come to know at Marie-story over the past few months. It’s been a great experience, I’m so glad I was given this opportunity! I’d like to offer my sincerest thanks to the staff at Marie- story, in particular 유정희 원장님 and 장현주 선생님, you’ve both made this an unforgettable experience!

국제교류문화진흥원 International Exchange & Cultural Promotion Institute Tel : My Marie-story My name is Colin Brown and I am veteran instructor at Mariestory. I originally come from the east coast of the United States, but have lived in Korea for over five years, studying as an international student in several of Korea’s best universities. After doing my major in East Asian history for my undergraduate studies in the United States, I came to Korea as an exchange student to study Korean history and language. After my exchange was finished, I continued to stay and study Korean language in the Ewha University language school. It was during this time that I became aware of the Mariestory history education program. Because of my interest and background in history I was eager to become involved and after undergoing training, began my teaching in the fall of After moving on to continue my Korean studies in Sogang University I continued to work with Mariestory. While most international students spend there weekends sleeping or hanging out with their friends, I got used to spending my weekends with handfuls of energetic kids who can be a lot of fun or a big headache. But, I have to say I really enjoy their individual personalities and it was a great opportunity for me to cultivate my ability to teach history. In 2011, I entered grad school in Korea University and recently completed my masters in International Development. During my graduate studies I was tired and stressed, so having to participate every weekend was tough. But I made it my mission to make the students I had laugh and hopefully help them to learn more at the same time. In turn the kids make me laugh and in a way my experience at Mariestory helped me to survive through grad school. Colin Brown FTRA Period : ~ present

국제교류문화진흥원 International Exchange & Cultural Promotion Institute Tel : From the beginning the concept of Mariestory was very intriguing to me. Having seen a number of different academies and weekend English programs in Korea for school children, using English education as a way to empower students with a cultural identity and a way to introduce their country’s history to foreigners in the future is a really great idea in my opinion. Prior to working in Mariestory, I recall seeing a number of similar weekend history programs in several museums that I visited. But these programs were only in Korean and seemed a bit dull with older instructors who had already past their prime. Mariestory reinvented this idea and gave it a new, energetic, and outward thinking spin. Looking back on my time at Mariestory is strange because I still feel like a new teacher, but its been more then three years now and I have seen many of my coworkers come and go. Not just coworkers, but I have met a lot of students, watched them grow, and see them graduate the program. My favorite part of this job is probably meeting the student who I had when they were young and seeing how far they have come. It’s really rewarding when your student gives you the same explanation or uses the same antidote to explain something that you taught them more then a year ago; that’s when you know that you’ve done a good job. I hope that I can continue to share my knowledge with students and help them to gain a better appreciate for the rich history of Korea which I have grown to value as much as the history of my own country. Hopefully we can have some fun in the process.
