I am a real teacher. Real teachers really care. I was a non- traditional student just like you. I received my Master’ Degree and Ph.D. while I was teaching elementary school and undergraduate classes. I love teaching non-traditional students because they have given up a lot to return to school and appreciate being here. I have very high expectations of my students but also have a great sense of humor! I also like to make my classrooms feel like early childhood classrooms so expect the unexpected. Are you ready? Let’s get started! A Little Bit About Me

SHOUT OUT! What’s this?

Benefits of attendance: connecting with your classmates and me, receiving information that is not in the classroom, getting better grades, having fun, being part of the whole Kaplan experience. If you are unable to attend, please listen to the archives. At this level, seminar is ungraded. However, seminar attendance is your key to success. Seminar is part of what makes Kaplan special. It is important to me that you attend seminar as well!

Unit 1: Foundations of Early Childhood Curriculum Unit 1 focuses on a conversation between you, your classmates and your instructor, an exchange that includes an in-depth discussion of how DAP (Developmentally Appropriate Practice) connects to curriculum development, and an inquiry into how current research, early childhood theory, and early childhood developmental patterns lay the foundation for successful curriculum models. Share what you discovered in this regard….

Defining Curriculum In CE420, we define Curriculum as everything that takes place in or is extended through the classroom. This includes materials, equipment, activities, experiences, field trips, lesson plans, the schedule, the organization, the atmosphere, the assessments, and the role of educators, students, parents, and the community. In CE420 you will become familiar with several well respected curriculum models and consider how the delivery of curriculum, the environmental design, and assessment components are best addressed. You will investigate and create curricular components based on your own knowledge and research and review standards that affect curriculum development.

A Holistic View of Curriculum Chapter 2 of the text explains how all domains (Aesthetic, Affective, Cognitive, Language, Physical, and Social) intertwine and the critical role this plays in constructive, active learning. Share what you’ve discovered regarding the following seminar discussion topics: Describe how a holistic approach to learning is reflected in principle learning theories. Describe how a holistic approach to learning should be reflected in curriculum development. Describe how a holistic approach to learning should be reflected in setting up the environment.

DAP: Understanding exactly how children develop How children develop: Holistically (Aesthetic, Affective, Cognitive, Language, Physical, and Social Domains) Orderly sequence Varying rates Conditions and circumstances that maximize children’s learning: Feel safe and secure Engage in active, hands-on sensory activities Engage in physical experience, social interaction, and reflection Engage in play Engage in meaningful activities connected to real life and past experience Motivated to learn via continuous process of challenge and mastery Receive individual consideration, attention

You are asked to choose one of these models, or research another curriculum model, and discuss the following: –Explain the theoretical foundation of either HighScope or Reggio Emilia curriculum. Is it a ‘Holistic’ approach? –Explain the role of the teacher in either HighScope or Reggio Emilia based programs and what teaching strategies connect to it. –Share ways in which either the HighScope or Region Emilia curriculum supports DAP (Developmentally Appropriate Practices). What model did you choose or are you familiar with? Share ways in which this model supports DAP.
