CHAPTER 2, SECTION 3 The Byzantine Empire

Justinian Ruled from 527 – 565AD. Wanted to reunite the Roman Empire and retake Italy. Removed any old or unchristian laws and created the Justinian Code to be fair to everyone. 532 – enemies tried to overthrow him. He wanted to run away, but his wife Theodora made him stay.

Theodora Helped Justinian rule well and effectively. Helped him end riots by having his soldiers kill the rioters (close to 30,000 people). Saved the emperor’s throne.

After Justinian More invasions by barbarians, Persians, Muslims. Later emperors lost all the land Justinian had gained – Ottoman Turks captured Constantinople and the Roman Empire ended after 1000 years.

Byzantine Empire After Justinian, people were influenced by the Greeks.  Spoke Greek  Studied Greek philosophy  Caused by trade: Constantinople is located between Europe and Asia.  Merchants from all over the world passed through the city and influenced the people.

Byzantine Emperors Had more power than earlier emperors. Showed off their power:  Made people crawl on their hands and knees to talk to the emperor.  Could not stand in his presence.  Head of the church – chosen by God to lead the empire and the church.

Byzantine Christianity Christianity was central to life. Devotion to God was shown in religious art –  Mosaics: pictures made with pieces of glass, jewels, stones, metals.  Enormous, elaborate churches like the Hagia Sophia.

Eastern Western Priests could get married. Religious services performed in Greek. The Emperor led the church and government. Priests could not marry. Religious services performed in Latin. Emperor led the government. Popes and Bishops led the church. Eastern v. Western Churches

Final Questions With your group, choose the three best questions that can be answered with your notes. Write the question and answer for each on the piece of paper. Now choose two of the best questions that cannot be answered with your notes and write them on the piece of paper. These may end up in a quiz…

Review Activity – Strong Leaders Choose from Augustus, Diocletian, Constantine, Clovis, Atilla The Hun, Justinian, or Theodora. Create a “campaign” poster for your chosen leader.  The poster should have a picture or symbol to represent your leader.  Include important adjectives to explain why your person should lead the Empire.  On the back, write a paragraph explaining why your leader is important. Use evidence from your notes and textbook.
