2 WHAT IS CULTURAL BRIEFING ? Is an information session which deals with those elements which show the lifelong qualities of a people as well as their present life. Can contain different material according to audience and need It explores a people’s culture, traditions, character, values, beliefs and customs. History

3 WHY CULTURAL BRIEFING ?  To break down barriers  For care to respond to cultural needs of CALD elderly  Contributes to quality care

4 WHAT IS PRESENTED ? PART 1 – PREAMBLE Focuses on legislative requirements, CALD programs, quality issues and user rights PART 2 – BACKGROUND INFORMATION on a specific CALD group NSW and aged care planning region demographics (and socio economic status) Brief migration history and socio economic status in Australia Language and dialect(s) Customs/traditions Religion/spirituality Family/extended family relationships

10 UKRAINIANS PRE MIGRATION Ukraine is a Slavic nation and shares many common roots with other Slavic nations such as Poland, Russia Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union between 1922 to 1991 About 8 million Ukrainians were starved to death during the Terror Famine (Holodomor) in the 1930’s Ukrainians fled Ukraine during World War 2 and came to Australia as refugees Ukrainians who are in there 80’s and 90’s may have experienced torture and trauma
