Reading and Critical Thinking Just as we can “hear” (when sound waves hit our eardrums) or “listen” (when we understand the sounds), there is a difference between merely reading words and understanding them and their relationship to the world around us. Both listening and reading for content involve a critical thinking process then, including but not limited to exploration, identification, clarification, analysis, evaluation, hypothesizing, and so on.

Note-taking Systems Outline Major topics are written beginning on the left, with smaller subtopics written indented to the right in increments. Coordination is the term used for assuring that subtopics are of equal significance (such as A., B., and C. topics being of equal importance and/or value). Pros: Organized, often required for academic papers Cons: Takes time and thought to ensure organization

Mapping Information and relationships are shown in a free-form diagram which may include circles or squares, arrows, and/or other shapes. Items with similar content are grouped together and/or connected by lines. Pros: Visual, shows relationships, may be quick to create, editable Cons: Not all material may fit this style. If the note-taker prefers notes done on the computer, he/she must be comfortable with textboxes and drawing tools or with Excel.
