LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth Consolidation of magnet interlocks in the PS complex – Warm magnet Interlock System (WIC) R.Mompo, G. Czendes, M. Zerlauth for the WIC team 1

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth Outline o (Legacy) magnet protection/interlocks in injector complex o Layout of the Warm Magnet Interlock (WIC) system o Status of WIC deployment in the accelerator complex o WIC to protect magnets b/w Linac 4 Booster PS ? o Very preliminary proposal o Open questions / discussion 2

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth 3 Legacy magnet protection/interlocks in injectors SPS mains and auxiliaries PS mains and auxiliaries AD, CTF3, n-TOF, East Zone… + Direct cabling (patch panels) North Zone

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth WIC (Warm magnet Interlock Controller) layout Standardized interlock system for normal conducting magnets based on PLC: –Collects inputs from thermo-switches, flow switches and internal PC faults –Then gives the Power Permit to the power converter 4 Beam Dump

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth WIC principle o The Warm magnet Interlock Controller is a PLC based system, using deported I/O crates (connected via Profibus). o The Siemens “F” (F stands for Fail safe) Series PLC is used, offering a self checking safety environment and programming through ‘Safety Matrix’. o We use generic SW and (to some extent) HW for all our installation, to allow for efficient and resource optimized installation, commissioning and operation. o Clear distinction between equipment safety and personnel protection (no red buttns/flasher!) The program running in the WIC is (on purpose) simple IF (Magnet Overheats) OR (Flow Switch opens) THEN [According to the Configuration file] Switch-off the relevant PC(s) IF (Magnet Overheats) OR (Flow Switch opens) OR (PC Status failure)THEN [According to the Configuration file] send Beam Dump signal 5

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth 6 WIC elements installed in LHC tunnel Thermoswitch - ELMWOOD Type 3106 – T117 Opening ~ 60 degrees Magnet Interlock Box, using a relay to simulate opening of a Thermo-switch for (re-) commissioning purposes Note: Only the Magnet Interlock Boxes are installed in the tunnel areas (I/O crates are installed in protected areas)

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth 7 Type of Interlock boxes 1-channel - Interlock Box: 1x Thermo-switch + 1x Remote test 2-channels - Interlock Box: 2x Thermo-switches + 2x Remote test 4-channels - Interlock Box: 3x Thermo-switches + 1x Flow switch + 4x Remote test

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth 8 Interlock boxes Interlock boxes are placed on or close to each magnet to collect all input signals. For maintenance purpose, a remote test feature is implemented (by means of a relay) in order to simulate the opening of any input signal. This operation can be done remotely and allow us to check periodically the installation during shutdowns.

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth WinCC supervision 9 Main faceplate PC widget Magnet widget o Remote supervision/testing of the installation for OP and equipment experts o Diagnostics o Archiving of faults

LIU-PSB Working Group meeting: 25/06/2015, Markus Zerlauth 10 ~30 PLCs & ~140 I/O chassis ~ 2300 magnets are protected Full responsibility of TE/MPE, including cabling PSLHC Booster TT2, TT10 SPS LT / LTB / BI LEIR Linac 3 Magnets currently not protected by WIC solution TT60/Ti2 Note: for PS mains and auxiliaries, the “old” magnet interlock system (EPC built) is currently under the responsibility of TE/MPE L4T Linac 4 Linac 2 Proton chain Ion chain TT40/Ti8 (since LS1) 4 WICs (since LS1) 7 (2007) (since 2004/05) (since 2009)(since 2005) deployed in accordance with L4 schedule WIC in the injector chain : the current status
