Matthew The Jewish Gospel Robert Carrillo John Oakes San Diego 2015

Theme of Matthew The Messiah is here and has brought salvation to all people.

Theme Passage Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Jesus Fulfilled the Law and the Prophets In that… 1. He met all the requirements. Leviticus 18:5 2. Through his death he met the penalty for all of us who did not fullfill all the requirements of the Law. 3. His life fulfilled all the Messianic expectations—the foreshadows and prefigures in the laws, the sacrifices, the festivals. 4. He expanded the Law of Moses to what God expected it to be all along.

Other Theme Passages in Matthew Matthew 1:21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins Matthew 28:18-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.

Things to Bear in Mind A strong Jewish element. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Jewish messianic expectation. Emphasis on fulfillment of historical messianic prophecies Jewish leaders strongly criticized. Five discourses with a topical arrangement. Jesus as “God with us.” Importance of Peter. Apostles not in as negative a light.

Structure of Matthew: Five Major Discourses Thematic rather than chronological Sermon on the Mount Ch 5-7 Commissioning of the Twelve Ch 10 Parables of the Kingdom Ch 13 Life in the Church Ch. 18 Woes on the Pharisees, The time of the end. Ch

So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord, to the potter. (Matthew 27:3-8)

Matthew 27:9-10 Jesus is God (Zech 11:13) All of us rejected Jesus. All of us sold him out for the price of a slave. The blood money was used to take care of the needs of Gentiles.
