Yorktown the Key to winning the Revolutionary War Was it fate or divine providence that allowed the Americans to win at Yorktown or brilliant military strategy?

General Washington gives off confidence in this portrait of him. Washington listened to others and made good decisions.

General Washington took his army south from New York to Yorktown. General Washington fooled British General Clinton by making him think he was still at New York. General Rochambeau talked to Washington about leaving New York and going to Yorktown.

Washington and the French met to plan the battle of Yorktown. Washington received aid from Lafayette and French General Rochambeau.

The French Fleet surround the British at Yorktown! The French Fleet outnumbered and defeated the British Fleet in Chesapeake Bay. Admiral De Grasse and the French Fleet came just in time.

British General Cornwallis is surrounded and must surrender at Yorktown! Cornwallis was surrounded on all sides by the Americans and French.

Yorktown was a battle of canons on both sides.

Canons could shoot exploding canon balls or bits of metal at forces close range.

Americans received special canons from France which devastated the British at Yorktown. These particular canons were not used again that we know of. Maybe lost at sea.

Canons delivered different shot at the battles of the revolution.

Actual Canon used at Yorktown

It took many soldiers to fire a canon effectively. Here it took five volunteers to fire the cannon.

Trenches were dug by both sides to prepare for battle at Yorktown. General Cornwallis moved his troops to the inner defenses and allowed the American and French to get closer without fighting.

The American Soldier had come a long way since the beginning of the Revolution. The Americans proved they were able and courageous soldiers by the end of the war.

Taking redoubt 9 &10 were crucial in defeating the British. Alexander Hamilton took one of the redoubts with unloaded weapons to surprise the British. Hamilton’s men fought hand to hand at the above redoubt.

British surrender to Americans and French. General Washington had General Clinton take the surrender sword. Clinton had been humiliated by the British before.

British General Cornwallis is forced to surrendered to General Washington at Yorktown! General Cornwallis did not attend the surrender ceremony.

This monument commemorates the Battle of Yorktown. The Battle of Yorktown brought an end to the British attempt to defeat the Americans.
