Question In “A Horse for Mathew”, what do Mathew and Sundance have in common? Explain your answer and support it with evidence from the selection

0 Point Response They both like horses Mathew loves to ride horses, Tommy likes to take care of them. “ It poured form me in a torrent of words: Mathew’s skill with horses before the accident, how we rode the Mesa together.

0 Point Response Mathew and the horse are both lonely they keep each other company

II. 1 Point Answer 1. In is an analysis only 2. Unclear connection between analysis and the evidence 3. Missing one of the two elements needed in an OER

1 Point Response Mathew got hurt by a horse and Sundance got hurt by people

1 Point Response Mathew and Sundance both have a fear of something. Sundance is afraid of ropes, “Mathew is afraid of riding a horse again. “I’m not going on any trail ride in six weeks, six year, or any time again.

III. 2 Point Answer III. 2 Point Answer 1. Both elements are present 2. May not have a “melting flow”

2 Point Response In “a horse for Mathew”, Mathew and Sundance are both afraid of each other.” Sensing that, he was as apprehensive of her as she was of him”

2 Point Response In “A Horse for Mathew”, Matthew and Sundance are alike in how they have lost trust for the opposite species. Matthew was in a serious accident where a horse fell on him. This results in a great fear, and he refuses to go near a horse. Sundance was mistreated and taken to a slaughter house. Because of this, she is deathly afraid of humans. Soon, however, they overcome their fear of one another because they understood that both of them have been mistreated. Matthew addresses their natural understanding when he state, “she took to me right off. Guess I’m the only one who really understood her.”

III. 3 Point Answer 1. Has all necessary elements 2. May have a little more elaboration or explanation 3. Connects to a higher plane of thought

3 Point Response In “A Horse for Matthew,” Matthew and Sundance have the same thing in common. They have experienced both physical and mental pain. Matthew not only suffered from a broken leg, but also received emotional trauma form the accident. “ the removed his cast last week…He won’t even go near a horse now.” Sundance has also been hurt in the past and is going thought the same thing as Matthew. “..someone's mistrusted that little paint. You can’t get close to her.” Together, a friendship with a common bond and understanding can overcome almost anything. “…they came at full gallop…wondered boy and wounded horse.” A friendship bond such as Matthew’s and Sundance’s cannot be broken.”
