“Set in Order” Maintaining what has been “Set in Order” in the Church Titus 1:5; 1 Timothy 3:8-15
God has Organized His people for Spiritual Service God had a pattern for the tabernacle (Exo. 25:9) The services of the temple had a set order: (2 Chronicles 29:35; Ezekiel 43:10-11) God has organized the church –The church is the temple of God today. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 1 Peter 2:5) –There is a set order to things in a local church. (Titus 1:5) –God’s order for the local church includes men who serve as deacons (1 Tim.3:10-15)
The importance and place of deacons in a local church Deacons are part of a Scripturally organized church (Philippians 1:1) Deacons are an office in the local church (Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:10, 13) “Deacon” (Gr. Diakonos) means servant or minister; the word is used for other kinds of servants –Christ (Romans 15:8) –The apostles (2 Corinthians 3:6) –Evangelists (1 Timothy 4:6) –Followers of Christ (John 12:26) –Civil authorities (Romans 13:4) –Satan’s servants (2 Corinthians 11:15) –Women who served the church (Romans 16:1) –Waiters at feasts (John 2:5; Matthew 22:13)
The appointment & work of deacons The Scriptures are not specific about how to select and appoint men to serve as deacons, but there are good Bible principles to use: The judges in Numbers 11:16-17 were chosen by Moses but appointed by God. In Acts 6:1-6, men were chosen to serve in the church to fulfill a specific function –The apostles determined the number of men to be selected. –The multitude vetted the men according to qualifications given by the apostles.
The appointment & work of deacons While the Scriptures do not specify what work deacons are to do, they indicate that… 1.Their work is not the same as preachers, apostles or elders (Philippians 1:1). 2.They are involved in some kind of service. 3.The service is done within the framework of the local church. 4.Thus, their work is similar to the work of the men chosen in Acts 6:1-5.
