Sinuses of the Skull Anatomy & Physiology

Paranasal Sinuses Paired cavities located in certain bones near the nasal cavity Lined with mucous membranes – Continuous with lining of the nasal cavity

Functions Produce mucous Serve as a resonating chamber (producing the unique sounds of our voices)

Sinusitis Inflammation of mucous membranes in sinuses due to allergic reaction or infection is called sinusitis If they swell enough to block drainage to nasal cavity  pressure builds  sinus headache

Locations of Paranasal Sinuses Frontal bone Sphenoid bone Ethmoid bone Maxillae
