How do we find our location on the surface of the earth?

To find our location on the surface of the earth we must use a coordinate system When we use a coordinate system we must have reference points When we use a coordinate system we must have reference points The reference point for latitude is the equator. The reference point for latitude is the equator. Equator- imaginary line drawn around the earth that divides it into two hemispheres. Equator- imaginary line drawn around the earth that divides it into two hemispheres.

PARALLELS We then draw lines commonly 15 degrees apart and parallel to the equator, called latitude lines or parallels We then draw lines commonly 15 degrees apart and parallel to the equator, called latitude lines or parallels

LATITUDE Latitude- angular distance measured in degrees north or south of the equator Latitude- angular distance measured in degrees north or south of the equator

BUT… You need another coordinate And another reference point And another reference point So… because the Royal Observatory was in Greenwich England at that time we drew a line from the north to the south pole that ran through Greenwich England and called it the PRIME MERIDIAN So… because the Royal Observatory was in Greenwich England at that time we drew a line from the north to the south pole that ran through Greenwich England and called it the PRIME MERIDIAN

LONGITUDE The angular distance measured in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian The angular distance measured in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian We then draw lines, commonly 15 degrees apart and meeting at the poles called MERIDIANS We then draw lines, commonly 15 degrees apart and meeting at the poles called MERIDIANS

USING THE SYSTEM To specify a location we first give the latitude (YOU MUST SPECIFY A DIRECTION) and then the longitude
