Is a seminar based on student-created screen capture videos a meaningful way of learning? Pekka Makkonen University of Jyväskylä FINLAND

Course An undergraduate course for the first-year majors: Basics of information management and information systems development Themes (1) administrative view to information resources management, (2) technological view to information resources management, (3) building information systems, and (4) organizational applications

Why problem-based coursework/seminar on the web? Combining learning based on both cognitive and social constructivism Students defined the problematic matters to learn by utilizing a lecture handout Students gathered information and presented that stuff in well-organized way as screen capture videos Students familiarized themselves with presentations produced by other students In this way students taught each other in their “own language” concerning the difficult matters of the course

How? Working in small groups (1 to 3 students) Composing Windows Media Player videos in which they reported What they learnt by searching for information on the web about the difficult matters of the course Web sites, which were useful The groups placed the videos on a web server They utilized the Optima e-learning platform and its shared workspace feature The groups created the links to videos from the Optima Other groups commented on the outcomes

Our research goals How the students experienced the coursework, How the students experienced making a coursework video, and How the students experienced watching other’s coursework videos. How did we evaluate these goals? Students’ ratings Does the use of our e-learning platform affect learning outcomes? This phenomena was evaluated based on pre- and post- questionaires

What we got Attitude was mainly positive concerning the coursework and seminar generally (mean=3.88) The result shows that the making videos phase was beneficial for most students (mean=3.75) The watching and commenting phase was the most beneficial for the students (mean=3.94) We did not find significant differences between two mean phases (the p value of the Wilcoxon Signed -Rank test=.225) Based on the p values of the Mann-Whitney test the use of e-learning tool is not a critical matter in the design of learning activities like this

Next step(s) Applying this approach to other applications of web 2.0 Evaluating this experiment based on connectivism which is a Learning theory for the digital age Ideas?
