BASIC FACTS The USA is made up of 50 states (Alaska – the largest, Texas, California, Colorado, Florida, ….) Two states Alaska and Hawaii are not directly attached to the continental US. It has borders with Canada in the north and Mexico in the south, Pacific Ocean in the west and Atlantic Ocean in the east.

Population – more than 300 mil people/inhabitants Languages – English and in a lot of areas Spanish because of many Mexican immigrants. Capital city – Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia) President – is elected for four years, (current president is Barrack Obama), his seat is in the White House. Pict.2 Pict.3

SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT The US is a federation of 50 states. The head of each state is the governor and each state has two senators. The federal government consists of three branches: Legislative power – Congress divided into: the Senate (100 senators, two from each state) the House of Representatives (435 members) Executive power – the President Judicial power – The Supreme Court There are two political parties – Republicans (conservative) and Democrats (liberal)

GEOGRAPHY The USA is a very diverse country. You can find mountains, desserts, lakes, canyons, plains, lowlands. The Rocky Mountains in the west. Pict.4.

HISTORY America was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 but he thought he was in India so he called the native people the Indians now they are called Native Americans. The US gained its independence from Britain on 4th July 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed. It is now celebrated as Independence Day. The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to The North won and the southern tradition of slavery was ended. President Abraham Lincoln was shot.

HISTORY OF 20th CENTURY After the surprise Japanese attack on the US Naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, the US entered the Second World War. The US suffered a terrorist attack on September 11th 2001, during which the World Trade Center in NYC was completely destroyed and the Pentagon in Washington, DC was damaged.
