Congo and Egypt Congo Who Imperialized: Belgians Why (motive): Economic reasons, wanted resources for profit, rubber and ivory, political: first to colonize, could bring national greatness ideological: social darwinism = felt they were superior How natives were treated: hands/arms were cut off, treated very badly, punishment for not enough rubber but also trophy like if they were animals How natives reacted: Congolese run from ALL foreigners, scared of getting killed Egypt Who Imperialized:Britain Why (motive): Geopolitics land was valuable, connected two seas and could help with trade, Suez Canal = economic motive, bring European culture = ideological How natives were treated: not as bad, but got into fights, British took their wealth and the Egyptians became poor, treated like “slaves” How natives reacted: Egyptians start rioting, big riot with weapons, injured a lot of europeans, ended up burning down the city, maybe a revolution tried to completely change government

Egypt and Congo Similarities They were both imperialized by Europeans Both were imperialized for economic reasons: trying to make profit Natives had no say Both European countries planned on “changing” the people  ideological bringing western civilization A lot of people were killed Differences Belgians were much more brutal by cutting off hands Egyptians fought back, Congolese were afraid Egyptians started as a stronger nation
