Listening to and Appraising Music Written Paper–1hour–80marks–20% At the end of your GCSE course in MAY 2012 you will sit a 1hour listening exam. During years 10 and 11 you will have done practice papers and listening exercises to fully prepare for the exam. Questions will be based on the areas of study. In the exam you will hear short excerpts of music taken from the three strands.

Completed in 20 hours of Supervised Time (There is no time limit in terms of the duration but very short pieces may not show your skills off.) Submit: Recording of the final composition (live, ICT or both). Musical Score (staff notation, graphic notation, tab, written account). Written appraisal completed in an AQA appraisal booklet. Candidate Record Form signed by the candidate and teacher.

Individual Performance: - unaccompanied solo (where this is the intended nature of the piece) - accompanied solo - a performance where the candidate has a substantial solo part. Technology-based Performance: - use a sequencer and/or multi-track recorder and manipulate the inputted data. - There should be at least three parts - Candidates must perform at least one of the parts in real or step time. Perform two different pieces: a) one for ‘Individual Performance’/‘Technology-based Performance’. b) one for ‘Group Performance’. Submit: Recording of both performances (assessed by the teacher during the live performance) Musical Score (notation or recording of original stimulus). Candidate Record Form signed by the candidate and teacher. Performing Music Controlled Assessment–60marks–40% Group Performance - Must consist of two or more live players including the candidate. - In a large ensemble, the candidate’s part must be clearly identifiable. - Groups may be conducted but not by the teacher assessing the performance. Avoid doubling of parts. You can perform your own music NOT Unit 2 or 4. You can use backing tracks.
