Lecture 1 Date: 24/1/2016 Pages: (1-17)

1.What do sociolinguistics Study? P:(1-2) Why do we say same things in different ways? P(3-4) 2.What are the different Ways we Say Things? P:(4-8)

1. What do sociolinguists Study) they study: They study: 1. The relation between language and society 2. Why we speak(chat)( conversation) differently in different social contexts. 3. To identify the social functions of language 4. The ways we use language to convey or communicate social meaning.

They also, 5.Examine the ways people use the language in different social context 6.provides a rich info. about the way language works. 7.about social relationship in a community. 8. The ways people signal(sign) shape of their social identity thro’ their language

Example 1(P:1) Ray: Hi mum. Mum: Hi, you’re late Ray: Yeah, that soot-bucket* kept us late again. * binbasket Mum: Nana’s here. Ray: Sorry, where is she?

The conversation in the last slide indicates that Ray : 1. described his teacher in a bad way He said..sorry…,because if he had knew that his grandmother at home.. He might say it in a polite manner. that means: (the ways we talk is restricted by social context or situation) It means: Look below, the same conversation said differently: Rule 1 1.We use different style in different social contexts

Very polite: Ray: Good afternoon, Sir Principal: What are you doing here at this time? Ray: Mr. Sutton kept us in, sir

Social factor affect Rays choice  Ray restricted by the social factors or context which influence his choice the ways he should speak. It means: Rule 2 Sociolinguistics is concerned with the relationship bw language and context in wc it is used

Language Functions(P: 2)Line 5 1. Ask for information from people 2. Give people information 3.To express indigenous (local) & annoyances

Beside: Admiration Respect Any utterance gives: info. and convey feelings An example: Ray’s utterance Yeah, that soot-bucket* kept us late again

Also, Ray tells us that his relation with his mum is unlimited he feels free when talking to her Unequal to his grandmother this gives us new: he chooses words’ choice according: Rule 3 To whom he speaks to ( sootbucket)- Sir

Task 1-(Page 2) A)compare between ray’s 2 conversations and tell that his relation between his mum and the principal. - What does this suggest about the social significance and the choice of words?)

B) Ray greeted his principlal saying”Good morning” How do you greet your principal? Is it same as greeting your father? Is it same as greeting your close friend? Why/ why not?

The way we talk reflects: 1. Our social identity. 2. Who we are 2. From where we come 3. Our social experience. Comparing with what we have written? It gives you nothing about the writer: age- gender- ethnicity- social background- linguistics choice (youngers use words differs from matures

Why we say the same things in different ways? Open the book on P:(3) the example 3 Compare types of greeting she received at office and that she receivers at home the age of greeters placetypeswhohowwhy officeHer Partnergoodbyeformal officeSecretarySee youRelation friendly roadCaretakerBye Mrs…Formal- title homeDaughterHi mumAge- casual homeFeeling affectionate MotherHello dear… Have a good day mum homehusbandSimply, U.
