How to grow your chapter

What makes a successful chapter? - meet regularly - active programs and/or campaigns - full Executive Committee with elections and turnover - quickly respond to s, phone calls, and social media - fun events - effective communication

Supporters Leaders (You!) Volunteers, Members Prospects The Funnel.

How To Recruit and Empower Surfrider Volunteers Begin with the end in mind. Plan your work and work your plan. Master the basics of what makes a chapter successful.

Connect Host chapter meetings and mixers at popular locations on a regular basis. Have Fun. Schedule monthly beach cleanups. Capture volunteer info and find ways for people to get more involved with your chapter. Students - high school students need community service hours and college students can make good interns. Collect contacts ( s, etc) and keep a database. Capture info for potential volunteers at chapter meetings and tabling events. Social Media with local chapter photos and videos. Event listings through Online Calendars and physical Community Boards (REI, etc.). Partner events – tabling, corporate beach cleanups, urban tides beach walks, etc.

Activate (engage & empower) Regular E-newsletter - at least once a month with info on upcoming events. Host a Core Volunteer Orientation and other training sessions when needed. Offer a volunteer application or volunteer ‘menu’ where people can see all of the options to volunteer with your chapter. Phone calls to volunteers when needed.

Lead Be organized and lead by example. Actively mentor volunteers and encourage them to own projects and take on leadership roles. Recognize and reward volunteers throughout the year and/or with an annual volunteer appreciation event. Attend Chapter Conferences and other leadership events. Utilize resources on Chapternet.

Be the change!
