Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills The student is expected to: Expressions, equations, and relationships—6.6.C Represent a given situation using verbal descriptions, tables, graphs, and equations in the form y = kx or y = x + b. Expressions, equations, and relationships—6.6.A Identify independent and dependent quantities from tables and graphs. Expressions, equations, and relationships—6.6.B Write an equation that represents the relationship between independent and dependent quantities from a table.

New Vocabulary Variable- is a symbol, usually a letter, used to represent an unknown number. Independent quantity- The input value. It can be any number you choose. Input values are written in numerical order. Ex. -3, -2, -1, 0… or 1, 2, 3, 4 Dependent quantity- The output value. It’s value depends on the input.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 1 y = x + 2 A Graph each equation.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 1 B y = 3x Graph each equation.

The graph shows the number of bracelets Olivia can make in an hour LESSON QUIZ 6.6.C Read the ordered pairs from the graph to make a table. 1.

Write an equation to model the relationship. y = 4x 2. The graph shows the number of bracelets Olivia can make in an hour.

Make a table that represents the relationship between number of loads and total cost. 3. The equation y = x + 2 represents the total cost of doing x loads of laundry at a laundromat, including buying a box of detergent.

Make a graph showing the relationship. 4. The equation y = x + 2 represents the total cost of doing x loads of laundry at a laundromat, including buying a box of detergent.

How can you use verbal descriptions, tables, and graphs to represent algebraic relationships? Sample answer: You can make a table from the verbal description and then make a graph from the ordered pairs in the table. From a graph, you can make a table and write an equation.
