The Social Sciences A Brief Intro

The Social Sciences Three Disciplines 1. Anthropology 2. Psychology 3. Sociology Remember These are not true sciences and require a good deal of speculation and generalizing to formulate conclusions.

Anthropology Main Focus The development of the human species and human cultures throughout the world Methods Used Living with the cultural group for extended period; observing rituals and group Behaviours. Participant Observation

Psychology Main Focus Individual behaviour, to discover the underlying triggers or causes of human behaviour Methods Used Studying people’s feelings, thoughts, and personality development through interviews to determine past influential experiences; Conducting animal experiments, believing these will lead to a greater understanding of the human mind.

Sociology Main Focus How people act in group situations; the development and structure of human society and how it works. Methods Used Conducting statistical analysis and observation.
