Open-Minded Forms of Government Procedure Reminder SWBAT categorize democracy, dictatorship, and monarchies as unlimited or limited governments. Set up your notebook with title, objective, and date. Write down HW in your planner. Answer the questions below. The homework: Find an online article about a foreign country. Annotate the article and use the information to determine if the country has limited or unlimited government. After the sub signs your planners, clear your desk off of everything except for the sheet of paper on your desk. Once the quiz starts, you will have 10 minutes to complete the quiz. The quiz is worth 10 points. Open-Minded Scholars WILL ask you what a landlocked country is—don’t tell them. I always ask them to make a good guess or inferences. They’re usually wrong, but the process is good experience for them. Teach landlocked countries while reviewing the answers.

Limited or Unlimited Government The following slides show examples of limited and unlimited government. Go through each slide, copy the notes in your spiral, and write if you think it is limited or unlimited government. This should be done in complete silence. You have 15 minutes.

Democracy A form of government where the people vote for who makes the laws of the land. Limited or Unlimited Government?

Dictatorship A form of government where the leader, called a dictator, has complete power over all of the country. Limited or Unlimited Government?

Monarchy Form of government where kings or queens have power and control over all of the country. Limited or Unlimited Government?

Communism Limited or Unlimited Government? A forms of government in which all property is held by the government and given out based on the needs of the people. Limited or Unlimited Government?

Discussion After you have gone through each slide, discuss the governments with your table groups. Everyone must agree on whether each government is limited or unlimited government. Discuss in your groups for 10 minutes, the sub will go over this with you.

Make Your Own Government (40 Minutes) The following slides contains the directions for the assignment. Everyone turn in your papers as a group, make sure you staple them together. Please turn this assignment in whether your group completes the assignment or not.

Tips There will be three types of people represented. The leader, upper class, and lower class. I strongly suggest that as the leader makes up the laws, everyone else writes how they feel about the laws. Everyone’s part is important, each person will have an individual grade according to what they turn in.

Leader What type of leader are you? Dictator, Monarch, etc. Come up with at least 10 laws to govern your country. Remember “at least” means that’s the lowest number you can have. Do these laws apply to you? Explain in detail why or why not. What are the consequences for breaking these laws?

Upper Class This will be one other person in the group. How do you feel about the laws made up by the leader? Come up with at least 6 laws that will benefit only you. What is the purpose for these laws? What are the consequences for breaking these laws?

Lower Class This will be the remainder of the group. How do you feel about each law made by the leader and the upper class? If you were in power what would you do to change these laws. Come up with at least 4 laws that will benefit EVERYONE!!!!!
