Place Value

Math Writing What do you already know about place value? It is the value of where the digit is in the number

Place Value We write our numbers using 10 symbols called DIGITS

Place Value The placement of our numbers is important!

Place Value What happens when we have more than ten? Let’s use the number 12 as an example

Place Value If we have 10 or more, we start a “tens” column, writing down how many “tens” we have, followed by how many “ones” Tens Ones 1 2

Place Value We can write this as one “ten” and two “ones” 1 x 10 + 2 x 1 Tens Ones 1 2

Place Value 3 “tens” and 5 “ones” 3 x 10 + 5 x 1 Tens Ones 3 5

Place Value If we have 1 “ten” but 0 “ones”, we would place a zero in that column Tens Ones 1

Place Value What would happen if we didn’t put the 0 in the “ones” place and just wrote the 1? Tens Ones 1

Place Value What would happen if we didn’t put the 0 in the “ones” place and just wrote the 1? Tens Ones 1

Place Value If we have 100 or more, we need to start another column Hundreds Tens Ones 1 4 3

Place Value The Place Value of 1 is 100 The Place Value of 4 is 40 Hundreds Tens Ones 1 4 3

One hundred forty-three Place Value We can also write this as 1 x 100 + 4 x 10 + 3 x 1 One hundred forty-three Hundreds Tens Ones 1 4 3

Place Value Three hundred sixty-nine 3 x 100 + 6 x 10 + 9 x 1 Tens: 60 Ones: 9 Hundreds Tens Ones 3 6 9

Place Value If we have bigger numbers, we just add one more column! Millions Hundred Thousands Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

Place Value Example Eleven thousand, three hundred, twenty-seven 1 x 10,000 + 1 x 1,000 + 3 x 100 + 2 x 10 + 7 x 1 Ten Thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 1 3 2 7
