ALFA’S NEW ADVOCACY PROGRAM THE ESSENCE OF ADVOCACY

WHAT IS AN ADVOCATE? “One that pleads the cause of another…” “One that defends or maintains a cause or proposal…” “One that supports or promotes the interests of another…”

ALFA DESIRES ADVOCATES THAT… Believe in the Cause -Altruistic Are Accountable -Righteous Strong Willed -Tough Have Conviction -Virtuous Take Action -Protect the People

PROGRAM OVERVIEW To encourage year-round advocacy from membership across ALFA’s advocacy spectrum Identify and reward top advocates Offered at the community executive director level and above

PATHWAY TO KNIGHTHOOD Advocates Must Complete These Criteria Within 12 Month Timeframe: Attend ALFA’s National Fly-In; or attend a State Affiliate/Chapter Advocacy Day Contribute at least $100 to ALFAPAC Coordinate or attend a district event for federal or state elected official (eg, hold district meeting with congressional staff, arrange community tour for elected official) Send three or more advocacy letters from ALFA’s Online Action Center

ADVOCATE RECOGNITION ALFA Knights Will Be Honored with the Following: Special recognition at the ALFA Conference & Expo (beginning in 2014) Unique program gift Invitation only “Round Table” event at conference with fellow award winners Framed and signed declaration from ALFA President & CEO, Rick Grimes

ALFA GOLDEN KNIGHT Gold Knights: Complete the ALFA Knight program for three consecutive years Represents the essence of the kind of commitment ALFA looks for from its membership Gold Knights will be featured in an article in ALFA’s Senior Living Executive (SLE) magazine.

TRACKING ACCOMPLISHMENTS Advocacy Program Submission Form Submit information through ALFA’s website Apply in a few short minutes Once submitted, ALFA staff will confirm information and then contact advocate

ALFA KNIGHT CHECKLIST During 2013, have you:  Attended ALFA Fly-In or State Affiliate/Chapter Advocacy Day?  Contributed at least $100 to ALFAPAC?  Coordinated or attended a district event for federal or state elected official?  Sent three or more advocacy letters from ALFA’s Online Action Center? Once completed, please go to and submit your information.

2013 ALFA ADVOCACY FLY-IN September 17-18, 2013 Budget Less busy time in Washington, DC. Already cut hotel costs for attendees by 17% from Attendance “But it’s during session…” was the #1 reason affiliates/Chapter members were unable to attend.
