ANTARCTICA the last “no-man’s land”

ANTARCTICA What is the status quo of political geography in Antarctica? What issues might require international cooperation? What resources might be of issue in Antarctica?

The Antarctic Treaty 1948: US proposes that Antarctica be administered politically as a UN trusteeship 1959: Antarctic Treaty signed by 12 nations which agree to peacefully coexist in Antarctica 28 additional nations as become signatories (now 80% of world’s population) The treaty: –Bans military activity and nuclear testing –Limits national programs to scientific inquiry –Ensures the free exchange of information between countries –Refuses to acknowledge future claims –Applies to all land and ice-shelves south of 60 degrees latitude In years since the treaty, consultive meetings have agreed to protect wildlife and areas of biological interest
