Mendel Ms. Cole

Remember when we classified our traits (hitchhiker's thumb, etc…) What are some possible traits of the daffodils on the front desk?

Flower Dissection: Part I Work with your partner from yesterday. Obtain a daffodil and a paint brush. Use scissors and tweezers to dissect and explore the flower. Record all observations on a clean sheet of paper. – Ex: Drawings, color, what things look like 10 minutes to explore

Flower Dissection: Part II Obtain a fresh daffodil if you need/want to. Watch Ms. Cole dissect on the doc camera and follow along. Be prepared to come to front and show people what you think.

Flower Dissection: Part II What is the purpose of the petals? Try to figure out which parts are male and female. How could you breed these flowers? – Hint: there is a tool you may not have used yet Pollination vs. Fertilization vs. Germination

Male Female

Gregor Mendel - Father of modern genetics - Genetics- study of heredity - Heredity- passing of traits from parent to offspring. - Conducted experiments on pea plants

Mendel’s Experiments - conducted self-pollination and cross pollination to observe expression of pea plant traits.

Self Pollination

Cross Pollination

Example 1. Cross-pollinated “true-bred” plants(P) 2. Observed traits of the P offspring (F 1 ) 3. Self pollinated F 1 plants 4. Observed traits of F 1 offspring (F 2 )

Mendel’s Pea Plant Experiment P GenerationF 1 GenerationF 2 Generation TallShortTall Short Cross PollinationSelf PollinationFinal Results

Mendel’s Results F 1 plants = 100% tall F 2 plants = 75% tall, 25% short Similar results occurred when each trait of a pea plant was isolated.

Mendel’s Conclusions 1.Traits are passed on by genes from parent to offspring. 2. Principle of Dominance - one trait may hide the expression of another trait. - Dominant- trait that is always expressed if present. - Recessive- trait that is hidden if a dominant trait is present.

3. Principle of Segregation - genes are separated during sex cell production. 4. Principle of Independent Assortment - alleles(forms of a gene) are separated independently to sex cells. Different traits are not linked together. Ex. Seed color with plant height

Meiosis: Two Part Cell Division Homologsseparate Sisterchromatidsseparate Diploid Meiosis I Meiosis II Diploid Haploidgametes

Elaborate – 5 minutes On the paper you wrote you flower observations on. How does the flower dissection relate to Gregor Mendel? Use vocab and show off your knowledge!

Main & Murky – turn in Write 3 main points from today’s lesson. Must be content-based. Write 1 or more murky points from today’s lesson. This is material that is unclear to you. Write 1 favorite point from today’s lesson. What did you enjoy about class today? On a scale of 1-5 how well did you learn today. – 1 being “I didn’t learn any of the information” – 5 being “I learned really well and feel confident about this material.”
