Motivation  Globally competitive production in Europe will need to be performed by a skilled workforce supported by advanced tools and advanced automation  A key enabler for European success will be the symbiosis of highly flexible people and advanced information technology  European industry has advanced technical and human resources but we do not utilize them to a maximum potential  The huge amount of production information gathered and generated by IT systems need to be presented in a manner that can truly speed up production processes, enable immediate reaction to issues and shortcomings.  In a typical production facility, tasks are assigned to different user roles (e.g. ranging from operator to equipment engineer, process engineer etc)  Providing just general information is not sufficient  Providing the whole information creates information overload 2

ICT issues at the shop floor  Information distribution usually neglects different user roles (e.g. operator, production engineer, etc.) in a typical production facility. The information source is not aware of the role of the information receiver and thus fails at delivering the required subset.  Information infrastructure fails to successfully aggregate and manage data from factory-wide sensor networks (e.g. NFC, RFID) as well as from various data sources such as MES and / or ERP, analyse such data and deliver it in a context-based manner to different users  Especially the integration of energy information is still lacking  Cognitive load of plant personnel e.g. shop-floor operators working under harsh conditions, is not properly addressed during information distribution  User Interfaces are often too complex and require much too effort to follow and use effectively either in harsh shop-floor environment or in back-office 3

Motivation Driven by Industrial needs 4 Current Situation Information distribution neglects different user roles in factory floor. ICT fails to successfully aggregate and manage data from sensors and various data sources (MES, ERP) analyze such data and deliver it in a context-based manner. User Interfaces are often too complex and fail to adapt to user current context especially in harsh factory- floor environments. Cognitive load, especially of shop-floor operators working under harsh conditions, is not addressed. Impact  Reduce human errors  Address quality issues in final products  Reduce work stoppages  Improve response time  Improve working experience of the operators
